I asked for day trip suggestions on where to go hiking from NYC (NOT COLD SPRING) and so many people shared GREAT ideas:

E.B. said πŸš— "Bear Mountain is great for beginners/on weekdays, πŸš†Harriman State Park has sooo many." Noa added regarding Harriman: "You can get to the Tuxedo stop on NJ transit and walk from there, totally doable without a car"

And shared the following links:Β

  • πŸš— Hunter Mountain
  • πŸš† Mount Beacon
  • πŸš— Kaaterskill Falls

Zeynep gives a +1 to that last one saying "Had a really good time hiking at kaaterskill falls". The waterfalls there sound TOO good to be missed.

Jamison noted πŸš— "some nice hikes just outside of new paltz! There is a nice park right outside of sleepy hollow! It's called Rockefeller state park"

Shawn said πŸš— "the bashakill" and being a birder, I know that would be a blast. Plus I see there's a drive-in movie theater near by. Cool!

Kit's suggestion was πŸš— "hook mountain...lots of trails. the one we did was great, up the mountain and then leisurely down and walking by the river" and Christian felt the same way, sending me the AllTrails link with the comment "This one!Β It was really cute! Vigorous but not super difficult. And part went by the water which was cute."

DJ said πŸš— "old croton aqueduct train is nice if u time the farmers markets and fairs right"

Jeffrey sent me πŸš— Giant Stairs

Jeremy suggested πŸš— "lake awosting"

Major props to Robin for sending the πŸš†Slotsburg train station with the note "so many good hikes from here"

Jordan (whom has excellent taste!) said πŸš— "Minnewaska and the Verderkeer Falls! Also GiantLedge on Panther Mountain!"

Can I go hiking in New York City?

Yes!Β NYC's Parks Department maintains hiking trails! One time I took the πŸš† + 🚌 to Forest Park and that was fun.

Simon messaged πŸš† "not exactly a day trip but inwood hill park! theres three different hiking trails of varying difficulty u can do". This I'm definitely keen to try!

I'm so down to do these any time.

Under the influence.

This video talking about South Mountain Reservation made it sound worth the 40-minute NJ Transit ride...is it??

THE WINNER

When Carissa said πŸš— "mt tammany loop by the delaware water gap - about an hour drive but once you’re there you can choose how long you wanna hike - anywhere from a 2mile up and back to the main view, up through the 12mi loop that I like!" I knew THAT would be the place. My bestie Jake and I had an excellent, hugely challenging hike up the green and white trails, encountering all kinds of terrains. And there were wild raspberries everywhere. A real joy!!!
